How to Price Your Items to Sell on UK Classified Ads

Pricing is the first thing buyers look at after the photos. An item priced fairly gets replies within days; the same item priced too high can sit unnoticed for weeks. Here is a practical way to set a price that works on UK classified sites.

Start with what the item sells for new

Search the brand and model on the big UK retailers and note the current new price. For electronics especially, check whether the model is still being sold or has been replaced. A two-year-old phone cannot be priced close to its successor and expect interest.

Check what used ones actually sell for

Search the same item on UK classified sites and marketplaces and look at completed or similar listings, not just asking prices. Asking prices are wishes; sold prices are facts. Take the lower half of the range you see if you want a quick sale, and the middle if you can wait.

Adjust for condition honestly

Be strict with yourself here. Scratches, missing cables, worn tyres, pet hair on a sofa — buyers will see all of it and will offer less anyway. If your item is genuinely as new, in its box, say so clearly, because that is worth real money. If it is well used, price it like the well-used examples you found, not like the best one on the market.

Leave a small margin to negotiate

Most UK buyers expect to offer a little less than the asking price. If you want £50 in your pocket, advertising at £55 gives room for a friendly offer without losing money. On big-ticket items like cars, a slightly higher asking price with room to move is normal and expected.

Round numbers work better

Prices like £45, £120 or £950 read more naturally than £43.99 or £127.50 for second-hand goods. Precise odd prices suit shops with new stock; they look odd on a used bike.

Use free or price-on-asking wisely

On AdNook, a £0.00 price shows as a free item, which is perfect for things you genuinely want to give away — and giveaways are often collected quickly. If the price depends on the buyer's needs (for example services or custom work), leave the price empty and it will display as price on asking. Do not write £0 for something you actually want money for; it wastes everyone's time.

Say how you want to be paid and collected

Clear collection and payment details reduce time-wasters. Mention if it is collection only, which area, and whether you accept cash, bank transfer or online payment. The more complete the ad, the more confident serious buyers feel.

Remember: listing is free

Posting standard adverts on AdNook is completely free — there is no fee to publish, no commission when you sell, and no payment required. If you want more people to see your ad, paid promotions (such as a Featured advert) are available and optional, but a good price, clear photos and an honest description do most of the work on their own.
