How to Buy and Sell Safely on Classified Ads in the UK
Most people you meet through local adverts are genuine. A few simple habits help keep it that way and protect you from scams.
Meet in a safe place
Meet in a busy public place during the day, such as outside a supermarket or a café. If someone needs to visit your home to collect a large item, ask a friend or family member to be there.
Check the item before paying
Look at the item carefully and test it if you can. For electronics, switch them on. For vehicles, check the documents, service history and that the seller's name matches the logbook.
Be careful with payments
Never send money in advance to someone you have not met, and be wary of anyone who pushes you to pay quickly. Cash on collection or an instant bank transfer while you are together are common choices. Do not click payment links sent by strangers.
Watch for common warning signs
- A price that seems far too low - A seller who cannot meet or show the item - Requests to move the conversation to another app straight away - Messages asking for codes, passwords or personal documents
Protect your personal details
Share only what is needed. You do not have to give your home address until you are comfortable.
Report anything suspicious
If an advert or message looks wrong, use the report button on the advert. Our team reviews reports and removes adverts that break the rules.
